Anicia Peters

CEO, National Commission for Research, Science and Technology, Namibia
Prof. Dr. Anicia Peters is the CEO of the National Commission of Research, Science and Technology (NCRST), an adjunct Research Professor at the University of Namibia, and was the Chairperson of the Presidential Task Force on 4IR (2021-2022). She served as Deputy Chair of the Namibia Qualifications Authority (NQA) and a Council member of the National Council for Higher Education in Namibia. She is the founder of the Africa Human Computer Interaction Conference (AfriCHI), serves on the Steering Committee of ACM CHI, and held the role of Technical Programme Co-Chair for the ACM CHI2023 conference. From 2019 to 2023, she also served as an Editor for the African Scientific Journal in collaboration with Elsevier and the Next Einstein Forum.

Prof. Peters holds a PhD and MSc in Human Computer Interaction from Iowa State University, USA, achieving a perfect 100% average and received an Honors award for her research along with several other awards for research. She pursued her studies as a recipient of the Fulbright International Science and Technology PhD Award, the Schlumberger Faculty for the Future Scholarship, and a Google Scholar award. Furthermore, she holds a National Diploma and a B.Tech degree in Information Technology (Bus. Comp.), both with honours (cum laude), from the former Polytechnic of Namibia (now NUST). Additionally, she completed a Post-Doc at Oregon State University.

Prof. Peters also gained valuable industry experience by working in Silicon Valley, which complemented her industry experience in Namibia. With over 30 years of academic, industry, and managerial experience both in Namibia and internationally, she has developed a diverse range of expertise, including working for Sasol in the oil exploration field.

Prof. Peters has supervised several Masters and PhD students and has over 90 research outputs with an H index of 17. In addition, she received the prestigious 2020 Google Inclusion Award and a research grant from Google AI in 2021. In May 2023, her HCI-AI research project with Prof. Shaimaa Lazem was rated as excellent among the top 100 global projects by the International Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence under the auspices of UNESCO.

Throughout her career, Prof. Peters has received numerous awards and accolades internationally and nationally for her research contributions, academic achievements, and leadership in the field of science and technology.
